American Heart Association
The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center recently received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The recognition signifies that the UConn Health Center has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance for at least 24 months to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients.

Get With The Guidelines® is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations.


Aetna Institute of Quality® Cardiac Care Facility
The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center has been recognized as an Aetna Institute of Quality® Cardiac Care Facility for comprehensive heart and vascular treatment. Aetna makes information about the quality and cost of health care services available to its members to help them make informed decisions about their health care needs. In line with this goal, Aetna recognizes hospitals and facilities in its network that offer specialized clinical services for certain health conditions. The award recognizes that the Health Center’s cardiology program consistently delivers evidence-based, safe care.

The U.S. News and World Report’s lists are the country’s most extensive, data-driven hospital rankings, based on patient safety, outcomes, reputation, nursing care and more. John Dempsey Hospital

In addition, the John Dempsey Hospital is home to the only full service Emergency Department in the Farmington Valley.

Through Bioscience Connecticut, construction will begin in 2013 for a new patient care tower on the Health Center campus, as well as renovations to the existing John Dempsey Hospital. The projects are expected to be completed in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

Outpatient Care

The physicians of the UConn Health Center form the region’s largest multispecialty practice. This includes a wide range of outpatient services, ranging from primary care, OB/GYN and dermatology to personalized services for older adults through the UConn Center on Aging, and many specialty services. Patients are seen on the Farmington campus, as well as satellite offices in West Hartford, East Hartford, Avon, Simsbury and Southington.

In all, the practice includes more than 450 physicians with expertise in more than 50 specialties.

Through Bioscience Connecticut, a new Ambulatory Care Center will be constructed on the UConn Health Center campus to house existing services and support the work of new faculty that will be joining the UConn Health Center.

Our Nurses

Professional nurses excel in an environment that acknowledges and rewards the individual clinician. John Dempsey Hospital is proud of its accomplished nursing staff, many of whom have earned advanced degrees or completed specialized training in areas such as cardiology, emergency medicine and neonatology. In fact, three of our nurse practitioners were among the first to earn their doctorate in nursing practice degrees from the UConn School of Nursing, a new doctorate program focused on enhanced clinical care.

Many of the nurses at John Dempsey Hospital have chosen a career in bedside care and have completed the requirements for promotion on the “clinical ladder” that recognizes and rewards nurses who have achieved and maintained a level of clinical expertise in their practice. Along with outstanding clinical skills, these nurses have a proven record of empowering patients and promoting healing through careful listening, empathy, ongoing education and family support.

John Dempsey Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies organizations and programs in the U.S. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

Dental Care

University Dentists, the group practice based on the Health Center’s Farmington campus, provides complete preventive, corrective and restorative care for patients of all ages. In addition, the student and resident run dental services provide an affordable safety net for patients with little or no insurance.

The UConn Health Center is home to a modern Center for Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry that offers contemporary dental implant therapies and is engaged in sophisticated research into bone growth and augmentation.

Correctional Managed Health Care (CMHC)

The Correctional Managed Health Care (CMHC) program, a partnership with the Department of Correction, delivers comprehensive managed health care to State of Connecticut inmates. Medical, mental health, dental and ancillary services are provided in all 18 correction facilities across the state.
