Going Beyond the Call: Dr. Winston Campbell and Dr. Frank Nichols Honored

As you know, earlier this week the UConn Health Center, together with academic medical centers and hospitals across the country, took time to celebrate National Doctors Day. At the UConn Health Center, two doctors – one physician and one dentist – were awarded the second annual Richard A. Garibaldi, M.D., Doctors Day Awards.

Please join me in congratulating the 2011 honorees: Winston Campbell, M.D., the Interim Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Frank Nichols, D.D.S., Ph.D., Professor, Division of Periodontology, UConn School of Dental Medicine.

Both Dr. Campbell and Dr. Nichols were nominated by the people who know them best: the nurses and dental clinic staff who work with them every day. The award was designed to recognize doctors “who are known for going above the call in their commitment to excellence and collaboration.”

In the nominating letters, UConn Health Center professionals noted Dr. Nichols’ and Dr. Campbell’s professionalism and their humanity. Both were cited for going the distance to help their patients, colleagues and peers. Of note, they are also both extremely dedicated to academic medicine and have contributed enormously to the success of their respective departments.

Again, I am delighted to extend my congratulations to Dr. Campbell and Dr. Nichols. Their work is a living tribute to Dr. Garibaldi’s legacy – and an inspiration to all of us.
