Leadership Transition

Last week President Herbst shared with you the exciting news that Frank Torti, M.D., has been appointed as the new Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine. I couldn’t be more pleased that Dr. Torti will be joining us. My interactions with him over the past months have given me great confidence that he will be a truly outstanding leader of the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Though Frank will not be officially in place until May 1, starting immediately I, along with many others, will be assisting him in order to ensure a smooth transition. I ask that you afford him the same courtesies and high level of support I have enjoyed during my time at the Health Center. Frank is very enthusiastic about leading an organization that is not only exceptionally committed to its mission but, with the advent of Bioscience Connecticut and Jackson Labs, highly enthusiastic about its future.

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Bruce Liang for all he has done while serving as Interim Dean of the School of Medicine since July of last year. Though Bruce’s plate was more than full before agreeing to take on the additional responsibilities, he served with distinction, determination and a grace that I deeply admire.

Lastly, it has been my pleasure to serve over these several months as the Interim Vice President of Health Affairs, an assignment that has increased the great pride and respect I have for our Health Center. As I look ahead and consider our new leadership, Bioscience Connecticut and Jackson Labs, I sincerely believe the best is yet to come.
