At John Dempsey Hospital

John Dempsey Hospital offers two different Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs, a thirty week, part-time “extended unit” that runs from September to April, and an eleven week, full-time “summer unit” that runs from May to August. These programs are intended to meet the needs of clergy in active ministry, seminary students and selected laypersons who wish to:

1. Develop their capacity for theological reflection.

2. Enhance their sense of pastoral identity.

3. Improve their pastoral ministry skills.

From four to eight students will be selected to participate in each unit of CPE.

Extended Unit

Students enrolled in the extended unit program will be expected to perform ten hours of pastoral ministry per week. Pastoral assignments will be negotiated with students, based on their learning goals, from a variety of clinical services at John Dempsey Hospital. These include cardiology, oncology, psychiatry, maternal and newborn care, surgery and emergency medicine. Students already engaged in ministry, however, may, with the supervisor's permission, arrange to complete some hours of pastoral care in their places of ministry. In addition, students will take part in structured group learning sessions on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. They will also be encouraged to participate in in-service events taking place in their assigned areas of ministry, and throughout UConn Health. Students will negotiate a time with the supervisor for one hour of individual supervision every other week. The supervisor will be available for consultation at all times that a student is on duty in the hospital.

Summer Unit

Students enrolled in the summer unit program will be on duty at John Dempsey Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Thus, they will spend at least forty hours per week engaged in the program. Except for the time that they are taking part in structured group learning activities, students will be involved in performing pastoral ministry. To apply, candidates must submit the necessary application materials. They will then be scheduled for an admission interview. Successful candidates will demonstrate openness to learning in an action-reflection educational model, and ability to minister under stress.
