Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

CPE Extended Unit Program

We are pleased to announce that our next program of Clinical Pastoral Education is scheduled to begin in the autumn of 2007. This Extended Unit of CPE will run from September 10, 2007 to March 27, 2008. It is intended to meet the needs of clergy in active ministry, seminarians and selected lay persons who wish to:

1. Develop their capacity for theological reflection.
2. Enhance their sense of pastoral identity.
3. Improve their pastoral ministry skills.

In addition, the program will be responsive to the individual learning goals of students.

Students will take part in structured group learning sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and will perform at least ten hours of pastoral ministry per week. Pastoral assignments will be negotiated with students from a variety of clinical services at John Dempsey Hospital such as cardiology, oncology, maternal and newborn care, psychiatry, surgery and emergency medicine. Students already engaged in ministry, however, may, with the supervisor's permission, arrange to complete some hours of pastoral care in their places of ministry. A tuition of $750.00 will be charged.

John Dempsey Hospital of the University of Connecticut Health Center offers all the learning resources of a major university teaching hospital including a skilled faculty, and a nationally renowned medical library.

To apply, candidates must submit the necessary application materials. They will then be scheduled for an admission interview. Successful candidates will demonstrate openness to learning in an action-reflection educational model, and ability to minister under stress.
