A Day in the Life of a Resident

1st 3 months of CA-1 no call – 1:1 supervision, Tues-Thurs CA-1 lectures 3-4pm

After 1st 3 months – average q5 calls a month with usually 2 weekends off

Typical day – Arrive at hospital 6:15-6:30, setup room, see first patient in preoperative area

Depending on which hospital, first patient in the OR at 7:45 AM (HH), 7:30 AM (JDH), 7:15 AM (SFH)

15 min morning break, 30 min lunch, 15 min afternoon break

Relieved of work approximately at 5pm 

Every Monday – relieved approximately at 3:15-3:30 for didactics (4-6pm), one Journal Club a month

One Tuesday of each month – relieved at approximately 3:15-3:30pm for Evening of Didactics (4-8pm)

One night a month TBA – simulation session (4-8pm)

4 weeks of vacation each year

Additional 1 week of conference time during CA2, 2 weeks of conference time during CA3 ($2000 fund each year - Must present at one)

Education fund for books, laptop, etc. during CA2 and CA3 ($1000 fund each year)
