First Year of Dermatology (PGY-2)

PGY-2 Residents are assigned to the outpatient clinic at the UConn Health Center (UCHC). This will include one continuity clinic of their own patients.
PGY-2 Residents are assigned to Veterans Hospital in Newington (VA) for a full day once a week

Second Year of Dermatology (PGY-3)

PGY-3 Residents will spend 6 months at the UCHC.  Their continuity clinic at UCHC will be year long.
PGY-3 Residents will spend one clinic every other week for 12 months at the VA.
PGY-3 Residents will spend 2 months in Dermatologic Surgery at the UCHC.
PGY-3 Residents will spend 2 months in Dermatopathology at the UCHC.
PGY-3 Residents will have 1 month of elective.

During months away from UCHC, PGY-3 residents will participate in entire Wednesday Educational Program and Tuesday morning Dermatopathology Courses.

Third Year of Dermatology (PGY-4)

PGY-4 Residents will spend 4 months at the UCHC. Their continuity clinic at UCHC will be year long.
PGY-4 Residents will spend one clinic every other week for 12 months at the VA.
PGY-4 Residents will spend 2 months in Dermatologic Surgery at the UCHC.
PGY-4 Residents will spend 2 months in Dermatopathology at the UCHC.
PGY-4 Residents will have 2 months of elective.  Electives include time spent at approved Basic Science Research, approved Clinical Project/Research, other approved Dermatology Residencies, or time at approved Associated Faculty Private Offices.

During months away from UCHC, PGY-4 residents will participate in entire Wednesday Educational Program and Tuesday morning Dermatopathology Courses.  In addition, they will continue to see patients in their continuity clinic at UCHC unless their elective is geographically located far enough away that this is not possible.

All of the conferences will be held at UCHC for ALL Residents - UCHC

a) Dermatopathology Unknowns – held weekly for one hour in the Dermatopathology sign-out room; residents are given 10 unknown dermatopathology slides one week prior to the conference.  The dermatopathology faculty will discuss the 10 slides with the residents.  (Faculty Coordinator:  Drs. Diane Hoss and Michael Murphy)

b) Dermatopathology Lectures – held weekly for two hours in the Dermatopathology sign-out room; dermatopathology faculty (course director – Dr. Philip E. Kerr) will review major dermpath textbooks illustrated by slide examples with the residents.

c) Grand Rounds Lecture – held monthly (12 times/year) for one hour in the Dermatology conference room; formal one-hour lecture given by faculty, UConn Health Center faculty, or visiting faculty (course directors – Drs. Diane L. Whitaker-Worth and Jane M. Grant-Kels).

d) Grand Rounds CPC – held bimonthly (24 times/year) for one and one-half hours in the Dermatology Clinic and Dermpath sign-out room; challenging/interesting patients are seen by residents and faculty, biopsy slides are reviewed and the cases are discussed (clinical cases coordinated by Drs. Diane Whitaker-Worth & Marti Jill Rothe, dermatopathology discussion coordinated by Dr. Diane M. Hoss). 

e)  Sequential Courses – to start in the spring of 2008. Will be held montly for two hours in the Dermatology conference room; designed to be a core course in pharmacology/immunology/ and microbiology. Rotating lectures given by UCHC faculty members in our department as well as from within the basic science departments and visiting lecturers.  Topics will range from basic science, pharmacology, and microbiology (course directors – Drs. Jane M. Grant-Kels, Maurice Feinstein and Richard Zeff.).

f) Kodachromes and Resident Lectures – held weekly for 1 hour in the Dermatology conference room; (run by chief resident and both department and volunteer faculty) teaching session reviewing clinical slides and giving didactic lectures (run by chief residents and Dr. Marti Rothe).

g) Textbook Review – held weekly for one hour in the Dermatology conference room; resident-run review of major dermatology textbooks with faculty supervision (run initially by faculty especially Drs. Steven Sloan, Arni Kristjansson, and Amy Payne but ultimately the chief residents will supervise this review.

h) Journal Club – held monthly for one hour in the Dermatology conference room; residents and available faculty present interesting articles from current dermatology, dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery journals.  Relevant articles from other journals can also be presented (course director – Dr. Steven B. Sloan).

i) Dermatological Pharmacology course – held weekly for one full year. Review of systemic medications used in dermatology. Core text reviewed: Systemic Drugs for Skin Disease by Wolverton and Wilkin.  Course Director: Drs. Marti Rothe & Hanspaul Makkar

j) New England Dermatologic Society meetings held 4 times a year, led by the sponsoring institution

k) American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting attended by 2nd and 3rd year residents. Basic Structure and Function of the Skin Course and Immunology Course will be required to be completed once by residents attending this meeting.

l) Dermatoethics – held 4 times a year.
