History and Background
photo of doctor treating child The University of Connecticut Health Center, which includes the School of Medicine, was founded in 1968 with the explicit mandate to educate primary care physicians. The Department of Family Medicine and our Residency Program were established in 1974. The fully accredited program is proud of our over 200 graduates, many whom practice in Connecticut, the Northeast, or in academic settings.

The University of Connecticut Health Center is located near the historic village of Farmington. Eighty percent or more of all clinical teaching of medical students occurs in the "downtown" hospitals of Hartford, including Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the primary hospital site for family medicine training. Both institutions jointly support the Department of Family Medicine.

The hospital's commitment to medical education includes over 100 full-time hospital-based faculty with University appointments and an impressive medical library for patient care, teaching, and research endeavors. In addition, the entire resources of the University of Connecticut Health Center, ranging from library services to patient consultations to electives, are readily available to our family medicine residents.

Department Mission
The mission of the University of Connecticut/Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center Department of Family Medicine, is to promote in all of its activities a model of excellence integrating education, clinical care, and research in family medicine. This model for the future, centered in the doctor-patient relationship, is family-centered, community oriented, health promoting, and locally serves the Hartford community. Education and clinical care are advanced by research, which also facilitates and evaluates these activities. The Department environment reflects the values of the model, which are respect, collaboration, compassion, and social justice.

The Department of Family Medicine
The Department of Family Medicine is composed of full-time faculty and community practitioners. Community family physicians share their patients and teach on the family medicine inpatient service, supervise deliveries on obstetrics, and support resident participation in AAFP national meetings through the Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians. Residency graduates frequently join practices in the area, and many practices hope to attract new partners.
