Saint
Francis Hospital and Medical Center (SFHMC) is a 617-bed teaching
hospital located in Hartford and an anchor of the Saint Francis Care system.
Saint Francis is the only "Top 100 Hospital" in Connecticut, in the elite
category of major teaching hospitals for many years. A regional referral
center, Saint Francis provides sophisticated, contemporary medicine with
major clinical concentrations in cardiology, oncology, women's and children's
services, behavioral health, emergency/trauma care and rehabilitation.
Saint Francis opened its 10-story Patient Care Tower in 1996, which
includes three floors dedicated to outpatient treatment; a Level 3 Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit; the John M. Gibbons Pavilion for Women; a critical
care unit; surgical suites; medical-surgical intermediate care units;
and the Hoffman Heart Institute of Connecticut. Saint Francis' Centers
of Excellence also include a Regional Cancer Center and Level 1 Emergency/Trauma
Center.
Preventive health and wellness are a priority, and the Center for Health Enhancement, which offers
health and wellness programs, a Fitness Center and a Senior Wellness Center, are located next door
to the Asylum Hill Family Medicine Center. Community education is also a priority, and a new Health
Learning Center houses an extensive collection of consumer-oriented health electronic and hard-copy
health materials.
Saint Francis' dedication to education is evident. Full-time chairs of every department hold
faculty appointments at the medical school. All attending staff teach residents, medical students
and each other. A fully integrated computer information system makes order entry and patient
records easily accessible, and the medical library has assigned a librarian to our residency.
