Fellowship Experience

Residents acquire experience in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal and athletically-related injuries and illnesses by direct care of patients through the spectrum of age and disease. Sports Medicine residents get exposure to numerous practice settings and styles to help develop their diagnostic skills. Learning is both lecture and clinically based. A longitudinal lecture series and required reading program supplement clinical experiences.
The resident initially evaluates patients who have been referred for multiple sports and exercise-related health problems, including injuries and medical problems that may impact exercise. After evaluation, the resident formulates a collaborative treatment plan for these patients and provides follow-up. He/she is responsible for continuing care of these patients. The faculty directly supervise the resident in the Sports Medicine Clinic, and provide direct hands-on teaching of technical procedures. The sports medicine resident is required to attend and participate in surgeries that involve their patients. He/she participates in the outpatient orthopedic procedures performed on their patients at all ambulatory sites.
The sports medicine resident is responsible for presenting four one-hour core conferences to the Department of Family Medicine residents and faculty. They actively participate in the tri-annual meetings of the UConn/UMass Sports Medicine Forums. They participate in four annual national and regional conferences.
