Goals

The goal of the University of Connecticut Geriatrics Fellowship is to produce highly skilled practitioners of geriatric medicine who will be able to extend geriatrics precepts to colleagues and systems of care, as well as patients and families.  The large majority of our graduates work in leadership positions in clinical program development, administration, research, and education.

Graduates of the University of Connecticut Geriatrics Fellowship program will be able to demonstrate understanding of:

1. Expert clinical care of older persons over a continuum of care sites, including acute hospital, office, institutional long term care, geropsychiatry, home care and rehabilitation;
2. Teaching and curriculum development in settings relevant to geriatric care;
3. Aging research in basic, clinical, epidemiologic or health policy investigations; and
4. Health policy and the health care delivery systems relevant to the elderly, and administrative issues in nursing home, home care, or clinic-based geriatrics programs.

 

Year 1

Longitudinal Experiences

• 1/2 day weekly primary and consultative geriatrics care at university-based Geriatrics Associates, PC
• 1/2 day weekly for didactics conferences, including Leadership Skills conferences
• 1/2 day per week independent study
• Fellows follow a small panel of nursing home patients after completing the long-term care rotation at Hebrew Healthcare
• Family medicine fellows may choose to follow an additional panel of patients in the family medicine clinic

Year 2

The second year combines longitudinal and block experiences to serve the specific career goals of each fellow.  In year 2, 55% is reserved for electives specific to the goals of the individual fellow.  These goals may include: completion of CMD, quality improvement and research projects, palliative medicine leadership, and teaching portfolio development. Qualified fellows may also complete an MPH or MSc Clinical Research.
