| The graduates of the University of Connecticut Pediatric Residency Program have been very successful in achieving their career goals. The program is designed to provide training that prepares our graduates for virtually any of the possible career choices beyond their general training, and the program record verifies that this design has achieved its intent.
Historically, fifty percent of our resident graduates have entered the practice of general pediatrics. Of this group, many have chosen to engage in primary care practice, many here in Connecticut. To this time, there has been no problem placing graduates in highly sought after practice positions here in our area, and it appears that these opportunities will persist into the foreseeable future. We have a vigorous career guidance effort, and we have also been very competitive and successful in placing those interested in practicing elsewhere with very good practice groups.
The remaining residents entering the practice of general pediatrics have chosen careers in academic pediatrics. Those entering general academic pediatrics generally obtain additional training in general academic pediatric fellowships, as chief residents or in other areas such as public health. These residents have experienced of a high degree of success in being accepted to their advanced experiences after they prepared for their careers in general academic pediatrics. Of note, we offer a fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics here in the University of Connecticut Department of Pediatrics.
The vast majority of the rest of our graduates enter subspecialty fellowships and careers. While a small number have entered corporate or exclusively research positions, the others have selected fellowship training from opportunities throughout the various subspecialty areas offered in pediatrics. Their choices of enrollment are distributed proportionately to the offerings across the full spectrum of possibilities. Our graduates have had no problem at all being accepted into some of the most prestigious fellowship programs, and the reports on their performance in these programs have been outstanding. The Department of Pediatrics sponsors subspecialty fellowship programs in Pediatric Pulmonology, Genetics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. |
