clinical divisions
general
pediatrics
The Division of General Pediatrics is involved in clinical activities at
a variety of sites throughout the Greater Hartford area. Members of the
division are responsible for clinical education and patient care within
busy faculty-based practices at our participating ambulatory sites. In
addition to providing preventive care and child health supervision,
members of the division care for a wide spectrum of pediatric problems,
ranging from common problems typically encountered within the practice
setting to complex developmental and behavioral issues. The clinical
activities of the division thus range from primary care to secondary and
even tertiary consultative care.
Members of the division are involved in a variety of research activities that
focus upon specific issues within the fields of general, preventive,
and developmental/behavioral pediatrics. The division has established
child abuse prevention and management, and injury and violence prevention
as major interests and has developed centers in these areas. Examples
of specific projects include the effectiveness of anticipatory guidance
during child health supervision, a campaign to promote the use of
bicycle helmets, the prevention of sleep problems during infancy,
clinical implications of folk illness, and the use of colposcopy
in diagnosing sexual abuse. Residents interact with division members
closely through most of their service rotations, and further experience
in clinical or research electives are offered. The division offers
a fellowship in General
Academic Pediatrics.
The Division of General Pediatrics has also developed hospitalist
programs at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and St. Francis
Hospital and Medical Center. These efforts have already enhanced
teaching, patient care and communication with community practitioners.
The pediatricians in the community are active in our educational
efforts on site, and offering experiences in block or longitudinal
format in their offices. Residents have recognized the value of
these efforts in their education.
