Dr Zemel and patient rheumatology

The Rheumatology Program is based at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and includes the evaluation and management of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease, lupus, and other painful musculoskeletal problems. This is a very active clinical service with participation primarily in outpatient care, but also inpatient care.

The research interests of the division include treatment of Lyme disease, aerobic functioning of children with JRA, and the development of a functional assessment tool for children with JRA. The division has active collaborations with such areas as orthopaedics, allergy and immunology, and rehabilitation services to create a complete approach to children with these problems. In addition to elective time, residents work with the pediatric rheumatologists in the disabled child curriculum and on consultation for the pediatric services.
