UCONN - Pediatric Residency Program

The Pediatric Surgery Program provides a full range of surgical evaluations and interventions throughout the program. There are 2,500 pediatric surgical admissions per year at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and a team of five pediatric surgeons provides both inpatient and outpatient services throughout the pediatric program. In the Neonatal Intensive Care Units, division members play a vital role in the care of newborns with life-threatening conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis, and malformations of the chest and abdomen.

A full range of diagnostic services are utilized in the evaluation of surgical problems, and collaboration occurs with surgical subspecialists skilled in the care of pediatric patients. Residents regularly interact with division members during their service and elective rotations. The Division of Pediatric Surgery is active in scholarly pursuits, and residents may elect more in-depth experiences, including research.

In addition to general pediatric surgery, Orthopedic surgery and ophthalmology noted above, there is a full complement of pediatric subspecialty programs throughout the program. These include otolaryngology, urology, cardiovascular surgery and pediatric gynecology. Residents provide care for patients admitted to CCMC on these services, and interact with them during other rotations and on electives. Residents may elect longitudinal or full block experiences in any of these areas, or they may elect a series of one-week experiences as part of a regular four-week block elective. The faculty in these surgical subspecialties welcome residents to participate in their scholarly pursuits.
