Celebrate Women Programs: November 2004
Farmington, Conn. – Sensitive advice for parents about how to talk to
children about war and terrorism, as well as a special program about
teens and depression, are available this month during programs offered
by Celebrate Women, a women’s health membership program of the
University of Connecticut Health Center.
How Money Works: Sonia Higgins-Barkman, a division leader with
Primerica Financial Services, will lead a workshop covering nine basic
financial concepts that are essential to all families, but are often
misunderstood. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, November 3, from
6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Link Room (use main hospital entrance).
How to Talk to Your Children about War and Terrorism: In a
time of war and constant talk about terrorist threats, Kathryn Dean,
M.S.W., of the Health Center’s department of psychiatry, will focus on
meaningful ways parents can talk with children and to help ensure their
ongoing basic sense of safety and security in today’s changing world.
Ms. Dean’s presentation will be held on Monday, November 8, from noon to
1 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room (use main hospital entrance).
What If … It’s Depression?: Kathie Halbach Moffitt, Ph.D., of
the Health Center’s department of psychiatry, will lead a discussion to
help parents recognize the warning signs of depression in children and
adolescents. She will also provide information about when, where and how
to find help for a child who is depressed and will show an acclaimed
video, “NOT Just a Phase: Understanding Kids and Depression.” Dr.
Moffitt’s presentation will be held at the Newington Library, 95 Cedar
Street, on Monday, November 8, from 7 to 8 p.m.
Preeclampsia Foundation Meeting: The Preeclampsia Foundation
will hold its second Connecticut meeting for people whose lives have
been touched by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including
preeclampsia, toxemia or pregnancy-induced hypertension. The group will
meet on Friday, November 19, at 7 p.m. in the Charlotte Johnson
Hollfelder Center for Women’s Health, conveniently located off the main
Health Center lobby.
