Scovill’s Garden Center will Host Event to Support the “Breast Cancer Resource Guide of Connecticut”

UConn Health Center Experts Will Speak on September 25th

Farmington, Conn. – In an effort to help answer some of the many questions women face when they are diagnosed with breast cancer, a group of advocates published a first-of-its-kind resource book for Connecticut women in 2003. The Breast Cancer Resource Guide of Connecticut was so successful more than 2,000 copies were distributed in its first year. The guide was distributed, free of charge, through hospitals, physicians offices and the media.

Now, women’s health advocates are raising money to reprint an updated version of the resource guide. Like the original, it provides timely information, covering a comprehensive range of topics including the biology and nature of cancer cells, treatment options, symptom management, and support groups. It also includes a thorough list of cancer services available across Connecticut.

On Saturday, September 25, a special fund raiser to benefit the reprinting of the Breast Cancer Resource Guide of Connecticut will be held at Scovill’s Garden Center on 18 Hillside Road in Cromwell. The event will begin with a reception at 10 a.m.

At 11 a.m., Kristen Zarfos, M.D., a surgeon and breast cancer specialist at the UConn Health Center, and medical director and co-founder of the resource guide initiative, will talk about the early detection of breast cancer. At noon, Carolyn D. Runowicz, M.D., director of Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at UConn Health Center, will talk about new advances in the prevention of breast cancer. Copies of Dr. Runowicz’s new book, The Answer to Cancer, which provides new insights into cancer prevention strategies, will be available that day.

“Prevention and early detection is our goal. If we can help one person in a most difficult time, this event will be a great success,” said Susan Scovill of Scovill’s Garden Center.
