Celebrate Women Programs: January 2006
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health
membership program of the UConn Health Center, is offering a variety of
educational programs in January including events aimed at starting your
new year out right by teaching you ways to relax, reduce stress and take
control of your health.
10 Powerful Ways to Reduce Stress: Learn how to bring
peacefulness, balance, and serenity into your day-to-day life. Life
coach Lori Woodhouse will explore a variety of stress reduction
techniques including relaxation breathing, laughter, goal-setting, and
meditation. The talk will be held on Monday, January 9, from 12 to 1 p.m.
in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center. You can
also view the live web cast online:

Zen Yoga and Deep Relaxation Workshop: Explore the connection
between body and mind with Aaron Hoopes, one of Celebrate Women’s most
recommended instructors. Zen Yoga raises energy levels while relieving
stress through peaceful, flowing movement and mindful breathing. Based
on the ancient arts of China, Japan and India, Zen Yoga offers simple
practices for healthy living. The workshop will be held on Wednesday,
January 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Academic Research Building’s large
conference room at the UConn Health Center. Bring a mat or towel. Fee of
$18 payable to “Aaron Hoopes” can be brought to class.
Tai Chi for Health and Healing: Clear your mind and energize
your body with the deep breathing and slow movements of this ancient
Chinese martial art. Come discover Tai Chi’s many health benefits and
how wonderfully relaxed you will feel. Risa Brophy has been teaching Tai
Chi for over 15 years. She has specialized training in Medical Qigong,
Tai Chi movements used to stimulate and balance energy in the body in
specific ways for disease prevention and healing. The classes will start
on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in the Keller Auditorium
at the UConn Health Center. $39 per four-week session can be brought to
class. If space is available, you may drop in for $10 per class.
Think Like a Decorator: The best rooms are uniquely
individual, harmonious and balanced, while still remaining lively and
interesting. Sound like an impossible challenge? Discover how a
decorator evaluates a room’s potential, and then learn how to bring it
all together with an artful mix of color, pattern, furniture, art, and
accessories. Our speaker, Kathy Hayes, principal of The Inside Story,
LLC in West Hartford, will help you identify your own personal style and
craft your own design statement to guide you as you create rooms you’ll
love to come home to. The talk will be held on Thursday, January 19, from 6
to 7 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.
Managing Shoulder Pain: Orthopedic surgeons’ Augustus Mazzocca
and Kevin Shea of the UConn Health Center have done extensive research
involving shoulder pain and injury and will share their latest findings
with you. Dr. Mazzocca will speak about disorders associated with
shoulder pain and basic non-operative and operative treatments. Dr. Shea
will discuss what to do if shoulder surgery doesn’t work for you. The
talk will be held on Tuesday, January 24, from 6:45 to 8 p.m. on the third
floor of the Medical Arts and Research Building (MARB) at the UConn
Health Center. Co-sponsored by Celebrate Aging.
Take Control of Your Health—How to Get Started: What is most
important? How can you decipher all of the confusing messages? Create a
plan of action that will support a long and active life, and one that is
potentially free of suffering and pain. Learn the facts from an expert
in nutrition and natural health. Dr. Mitch Kennedy is a nationally
board-certified and licensed naturopathic physician. The talk will be
held on Wednesday, January 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room
at the UConn Health Center.
