UConn Health Center Urologist, Dr. John Taylor, Receives Prestigious
Award from the American Geriatrics Society
FARMINGTON, CONN. – John A. Taylor, III, M.D., a general
urologist at the University of Connecticut Health Center with research
interests in urologic cancers and bladder function, is among the
recipients of this year’s prestigious Dennis W. Jahnigen Career
Development Scholars Award, administered by the American Geriatrics
Society and funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Atlantic
Philanthropies.
This is a two year, $200,000 research award for specialists, designed
to promote new insights into the geriatrics aspects of their respective
disciplines. Dr. Taylor is one of 10 specialists nationally to receive
the award in 2005. Other awardees are in areas such as emergency
medicine, gynecology, anesthesiology and more.
Dr. Taylor’s interest is in the area of urinary retention and bladder
function among older Americans. His project will be supported by Peter
Albertsen, M.D., chairman of the Health Center’s division of urology and
George Kuchel, M.D., director of the UConn Center on Aging.
“Dr. Taylor was selected for this program because of the promise
demonstrated in his proposal, the sponsorship of his mentors, and the
support of his institution,” said Paul Katz, M.D., chair of the Jahnigen
Central Committee and a professor of medicine at the University of
Rochester Medical School.
In addition, Dr. Taylor has been selected to participate in the
“Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program,” to help increase
the geriatrics content in the urology residency program at the UConn
School of Medicine. This award is funded by the John A. Hartford
Foundation.
Dr. Taylor received his medical degree from Columbia University
College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency at
Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He served on active duty in the
U.S. Navy for three years and joined the UConn Health Center in 2003
from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he was
an investigator in the Department of Defense’s Center for Prostate
Disease Research.
Dr. Taylor sees patients at the UConn Health Center in Farmington and
the West Hartford office of UConn Health Partners. His areas of
expertise include general urology and urologic cancer surgery as well as
laparoscopic surgery. He also has experience in the evaluation and
treatment of urinary incontinence and bladder problems affecting women.
