Celebrate Women Programs: November 2005

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health membership program of the UConn Health Center, is offering a variety of educational programs in November including the UConn Alumni Association Women’s Leadership Roundtable.

Karate Classes for Women: Monthly karate classes are being offered with an emphasis on the needs of women. Instructor Darryl Baleshiski earned a third degree black belt while training with Grand Master Eizo Shimabukuro in Okinawa. Women will learn how to defend themselves, reduce the chance of being attacked, and maximize their own strengths. The next session begins on Wednesday, November 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Keller Auditorium at the UConn Health Center. The $50 monthly fee is due on the first Wednesday of the month.

Stress Free Holidays: Do you want to create a holiday season that is filled with ease, joy and peace? Yes, it’s possible! Life coach, Lori Woodhouse, will lead this informative, reflective, relaxing and fun workshop where you will learn techniques to truly enjoy your holiday celebrations. It will be held on Wednesday, November 2, from 6 to 7:15 p.m., in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.

Opening Doors – UConn Alumni Association Women’s Leadership Roundtable: Our Four-Women Panel will discuss the doors that were opened to them and the doors they have opened for others in their careers and personal life. The event will be held on Thursday, November 3, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the University of Connecticut School of Business, 100 Constitution Plaza, Hartford. The fee is $20 and $15 for alumni members. Create a Life You Love: Move from a life of reaction to a life of YOUR creation. Act in “energetic partnership” with the world around you. Beverly Sastri will lead the workshop being held on Sunday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center. The fee is $89 and payable in advance to “Power Source Now, LLC,” P.O. Box 452, Guilford, CT 06437. Bring your lunch.

Celebrate Women and L’Oreal Paris Bring You – An Update on Ovarian Cancer Research: Drs. Carolyn Runowicz and John Nash from the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UConn Health Center will speak on ovarian and other cancer research being conducted at the Health Center. L’Oreal’s spokesperson from the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation will address the group on L’Oreal’s involvement and support of ovarian cancer research. The first 50 people to arrive will receive a free commemorative tile. The program is partially supported through the Julie Merle Epstein Cancer Fund at the Health Center and will be held on Sunday, November 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the L’Oreal Paris store at Westfarms Mall in Farmington. Refreshments provided.

Choices – Are Yours Working for You?: Are you satisfied with yourself, your life, relationships, where you are today? So many things affect our quality of life. Some we can’t control. What we CAN control is how we choose to react. Our choices can strongly impact our health. Malinda Branson will lead this two-week workshop which will help you become more aware of your choices and teach you how to make choices that can change your life for the better. The two-week series will be held on Tuesday, November 8 and Tuesday, November 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Center for Women’s Health at the UConn Health Center. Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle: It is never too late to adopt a healthy regimen into your life. Learn more about nutrition, exercise, age-appropriate screening tests, and much more so you can be on your way to a long, happy, healthy life. Sarah Dainiak, MD, Department of Medicine at the UConn Health Center will lead the discussion on Wednesday, November 9, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the UConn Medical Group, 381 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury.

Cancer and Nutrition: Oncology dietitian Catherine Carter will discuss methods to help decrease your risk of cancer by making dietary changes and following general nutrition guidelines. The talk will be held Monday, November 14, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health Center.
