Eye Surgeons Present ‘Seeing into the Future’ at Discovery November 10

“Seeing into the Future: An Overview of Common Eye Disorders” is the subject of the next Discovery Series November 10 at 7 p.m. in the University of Connecticut Health Center Keller Auditorium, 263 Farmington Avenue, Farmington.

Presenters are UConn School of Medicine faculty and ophthalmologists.

Jeanine Suchecki, M.D., assistant professor of surgery, and director of the Division of Ophthalmology, will give opening remarks and a general program overview. She will also speak on glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

William Ehlers, M.D., assistant professor of surgery and director of refractive surgery, will discuss new advances in refractive surgery.

Refractive surgery includes three procedures using a laser – Lasik, Lasek and PRK – that reshape the cornea and change the way the eyes refract light.

For people who are far-sighted, eye surgeons make the central cornea steeper and for those who are near-sighted, the central cornea is leveled. The goal is to correct vision problems and dramatically, if not completely, reduce the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. The surgeries have been available in the U.S. for about 10 years and the procedures have benefited from steady improvements in lasers and sophisticated computer-guided equipment.

The Discovery Series is a series of free lectures intended to educate the public on the latest in clinical research, disease, wellness and prevention. Lecturers are School of Medicine faculty and include clinicians, researchers and educators. There will be time at the end of the lecture for questions and answers.
