Understanding Hereditary Cancers

Discovery Series Topic on September 22nd

FARMINGTON, CONN. – What are hereditary cancers and what can individuals and families do to understand – and lower – their risk? A panel of experts from the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center will answer these questions during a September 22 Discovery Series program at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

As always, the Discovery Series is free and will begin at 7 p.m. in the Health Center’s Keller Auditorium. Registration is required by calling 800-535-6232 or 860-679-7692.

Carolyn D. Runowicz, director of the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center and President-Elect of the American Cancer Society, will serve as moderator for the program and will provide an overview of today’s latest research about hereditary cancers.

“Our goal is to empower men and women with knowledge to understand hereditary cancers. By being aware of your family history, you can become more vigilant about managing the lifestyle factors that influence your cancer risk and getting regular screening tests,” Dr. Runowicz added, noting that about five to 10 percent of all cancers are hereditary.

John D. Nash, M.D., director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, and Lori Wilson, M.D., a surgical oncologist, will present information about risk factors and risk reduction strategies related to ovarian and breast cancers, respectively. Also, Robert Greenstein, M.D., director of the Division of Human Genetics, will share information about available counseling and testing services for individuals who are concerned about their family history.
