Celebrate Women Programs: January 2007
Farmington, Conn. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health
membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center,
provides valuable health and wellness information to the community. A
variety of educational programs are being offered in January.
When Gambling Becomes a Problem: Jeremiah Weinstock, Ph.D., whose
focus will be on women and teen gambling, will discuss how and when
gambling becomes a problem. Topics include background information, risk
factors, consequences, and how to get help. The talk will be held on
Monday, January 8, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center
at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. It can be
viewed live via webcast and will be archived at
www.celebrate.uchc.edu/webcast.
Spirituality Study Group: Tap into your inner self, the source
of guidance and advice on the things that matter most to us. Group
sessions will be led by the Kathleen Kiley, an expert in spiritual
healing and dream analysis, on the second Thursday of each month and
will include discussion, reflection, dream interpretation, and guided
meditations to unite your inner and outer self. The talk will be held on
Thursday, January 11, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Medical Arts and
Research Building, Room N4002, at the UConn Health Center, 263
Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee for the class is $10.
Nutrition, Empowerment, and Motivational Series: Forget the
resolutions and make effective plans. We'll start with an introduction
to healthy eating. Subsequent topics include how to effectively lose
weight, conquer self-defeating behaviors, reach goals, overcome
setbacks, and more. Kimberly Lawrence, holistic health counselor, will
lead the six-week series held on Wednesdays, beginning January 17, from
6 to 7 p.m. in the Academic Research Building, room EG-052 at the UConn
Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The fee is $108 for the
six-week series, $120 for non-members.
Advances in Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery – Enhancing Your
Mobility: If you’ve been considering a hip or knee replacement, this
talk is for you. Jay Lieberman, M.D., director of the Musculoskeletal
Institute at the UConn Health Center, will speak about the latest
techniques in knee and hip replacement therapy. The talk will be held on
Thursday, January 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Keller Auditorium at the UConn
Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Lower Body Workout: This challenging core workout is taught by
Lynn MacDonald, certified personal trainer, and will focus on toning and
reshaping your buttocks, legs, and thighs. All levels are welcome. Bring
a mat or towel and water. The class will be held on Wednesday, January
24, from 6 to 7 p.m., in the Academic Research Building’s large
conference room (EG-013), UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave.,
Farmington.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration: In the United States,
age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of central
vision loss in people over the age of 50. Age-related macular
degeneration may be classified as either atrophic (dry) or neovascular
(wet). Elizabeth Plotkin Simmons, M.D., ophthalmologist and medical
retina specialist at the UConn Health Center, will present an overview
of both types and discuss symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and
treatment. The talk will be held on Tuesday, January 30, from 9:30 to
10:30 a.m., Granby Senior Center, 15C North Granby Road.
Lung Cancer – Facts, Choices and Hope: Raymond Foley, M.D.,
pulmonologist at the UConn Health Center, will discuss the epidemiology
of lung cancer and prevention methods, such as smoking cessation, and CT
screenings. Daniel Fusco, M.D., community physician, will focus on the
role of the surgeon, types of surgery and expected surgical outcomes.
Susan Tannenbaum, M.D., hematologist/oncologist at the UConn
HealthCenter, will speak about state-of-the-art systematic therapy and
hope for advances in the future use of biologic therapies. The talk will
be held Tuesday, January 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning
Center at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
