Varicose and Spider Vein Treatments: Varicose and spider veins
are prevalent in approximately 80 million adults. These veins can be
painful and unsightly, but different treatments are available depending
on the severity of the problem. Severe varicose veins can cause health
problems such as blood clots, skin ulcers, and swelling. Michael Dahn,
M.D., professor of surgery at the UConn Health Center, will discuss the
causes and symptoms, and the latest non-surgical procedures, including
sclerotherapy and laser treatment. The talk will be held Tuesday, August
8, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health
Center.
Finding Balance as a Parent or Grandparent: Karen Steinberg,
Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at the UConn Health Center,
will discuss the complexities of parenting and grandparenting. She will
focus on learning how to balance personal needs and those of others,
relational connection with structure and limit-setting, and developing
the skills to adjust to the different stages of child development. The
talk will be held Monday, August 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry
Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center. The lecture can also be

will be held Thursday, August 24, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. in the Commons
Building, 52 Missionary Road. The talks are fee and open to the public.
Acid Reflux and Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders: Acid reflux is
extremely common and caused when acid from the stomach flows up into the
esophagus leading to heartburn. Kourosh Parham, M.D., assistant
professor of surgery at the UConn Health Center, will discuss how reflux
of acid can also affect the ear, nose, and throat, and cause infections,
hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and the feeling of something stuck in
the throat. Dr. Parham will also talk about a new in-office procedure,
transnasal esophagoscopy, that examines the esophagus and top portion of
the stomach without the need for sedation. The procedure is used as a
screening tool to evaluate patients with long-standing reflux-related
complaints and to check for abnormalities in the throat, airway, and
esophagus. The talk will be held Thursday, August 24, from 6 to 7 p.m.
in the Henry Low Learning Center at the UConn Health Center.
