Health Center
Expertise in Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Faryal S. Mirza, M.D., an endocrinologist with
expertise in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, is now seeing
patients at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
Dr. Mirza joins an experienced team with the UConn Center for
Osteoporosis, which is led by an internationally recognized expert,
Lawrence Raisz, M.D., and is part of the Musculoskeletal Institute.
“The UConn team has made significant contributions to our
understanding of the mechanisms of osteoporosis,” Dr. Mirza said. “My
role is to provide highly personalized care to help women prevent
osteoporosis in the first place and treat it successfully if it occurs.”
An experienced clinician, Dr. Mirza completed an internship and
residency in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian, St. Luke’s Grant
Hospital of Chicago and Westlake Hospital. She then worked as an
internal medicine specialist at Lee County Community Hospital in
Pennington Gap, Virginia for six years. During that time, she also
served as the director and administrator of primary care services at
Rose Hill Rural Health Clinic in Lee County.
Dr. Mirza went on to pursue a fellowship in hypertension at Harvard
Medical School, with special interest in post-menopausal hypertension.
She originally came to the UConn School of Medicine in 2003 and
completed back-to-back fellowships in both women’s health and
endocrinology.
“Dr. Mirza’s professional experience and superb training will be a
true asset to our patients. She has a unique perspective with respect to
managing all medical issues associated with osteoporosis,” said Jay R.
Lieberman, M.D., director of the Musculoskeletal Institute.
The Musculoskeletal Institute offers world-class services to help men
and women gain mobility and maintain overall health, including
orthopaedic surgery and care for spinal diseases, osteoporosis,
rheumatologic conditions and more.
Dr. Mirza is an assistant professor of medicine in the Department of
Endocrinology and is also seeing patients with general endocrine
problems in the Health Center’s endocrinology program.
