Celebrate Women Programs: December 2007
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health
membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center,
provides valuable health and wellness information to the community.
A variety of programs are being offered in December.
Changes in Your Skin and Mohs Surgery: As people grow
older, their skin changes. Learn about the different types of skin
growths, how to distinguish benign moles from melanoma, and when to
be concerned. The Department of Dermatology’s Hanspaul Makkar, M.D.,
and Steven Brett Sloan, M.D., will talk about Mohs micrographic
surgery, a highly effective form of skin cancer treatment - when
it’s recommended, preparation and aftercare. The talk will be held
Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center,
UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Keeping Our Skeleton Healthy and Happy: Jane Kerstetter,
Ph.D., R.D., associate professor of allied health sciences, UConn,
Storrs, will discuss how to use nutrition to keep your bones strong
throughout your life. Special emphasis will be placed on how to
achieve the latest recommendations for dietary protein, calcium and
vitamin D for women older than 60. The discussion will be held
Thursday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center,
UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Women and Addictive Behaviors: There are gender
differences when it comes to addiction. Edie Thompson with the
Employee Assistance Program will talk about addictive behaviors in
women. What is unique? What are the patterns? The talk will be held
Monday, Dec. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning
Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington. The
lecture can also be viewed live at

are becoming the treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth.
They feel comfortable and secure, and are an attractive alternative
to dentures and bridges. Jacqueline P. Duncan, D.M.D., will discuss
when you should consider dental implants, who is a candidate and how
a dental implant is done. The talk will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12,
from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center, UConn Health
