Blood Disorders Specialist Joins UConn Health
Center
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Biree Andemariam, M.D., is now seeing
patients at the newly established Lea’s Center for Hematologic
Disorders in the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at
the University of Connecticut Health Center.
Andemariam specializes in hematologic blood disorders and
hematologic oncology. Her areas of interest include hemophilia,
sickle cell disease, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and
multiple myeloma. She also has a particular interest in bleeding and
clotting disorders that impact women’s health.
“We’re here not only to prevent and treat cancer, but also to
develop clinical and translational research to uncover new and more
effective ways to do it,” Andemariam says.
The Hartford nonprofit Lea’s Foundation for Leukemia Research has
committed $1.25 million to establish a new center for hematological
disorders at the UConn Health Center, which will include
Andemariam’s blood disorder research.
“Dr. Andemariam is part of what will be a critical mass of very
well-qualified doctors whom Lea’s Foundation is enabling us to
recruit,” says Neag Cancer Center Director Carolyn D. Runowicz, M.D.
“ She is a superbly trained, outstanding clinician-scientist who
comes to us from a leading New York program.”
Andemariam graduated with research honors from Tufts University
School of Medicine. She completed her postdoctoral training at New
York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell
University, as an intern and assistant chief resident of internal
medicine, then as a clinical fellow and ultimately chief fellow of
hematology and medical oncology. She currently is pursuing a
master’s in clinical investigation at Cornell.
Andemariam, 33, is a Hartford resident.
