May 3: Free Cardiovascular Screenings in Torrington
Offered by experts with the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center, thanks to the Neag Outreach Educational Fund
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Experts from the Pat and Jim Calhoun
Cardiology Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center
will offer free cardiovascular screenings, including cholesterol and
blood pressure readings, nutritional counseling and tests to help
determine a person’s risk for stroke and peripheral vascular
disease. The screenings will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. at Sullivan Senior Center on 88 East Albert Street in
Torrington.
The event is being made possible by a grant from the Neag
Outreach Educational Fund, which was established by Torrington
natives Carole and Ray Neag, who have a strong history of support to
the University of Connecticut and the community.
Of all the services that will be offered on May 3, the only test
that requires a scheduled appointment is the Ankle Brachial Index
(ABI) test that screens patients for peripheral vascular disease – a
common but largely “silent” condition that increases a person’s risk
of stroke and heart attack.
The ABI test allows UConn cardiologists to compare blood pressure
readings in the arm and the ankle, using a regular blood pressure
cuff on the arm and a special ultrasonic device to evaluate blood
flow in the leg. Participants will be asked to remove socks or
stockings. The test takes about 30 minutes and appointments can be
made by calling 800-535-6232.
“We are delighted to offer blood pressure and cholesterol
readings, as well as other tests, to provide men and women with
important information about their risk of cardiovascular disease,”
said Bruce Liang, M.D., director of the Pat and Jim Calhoun
Cardiology Center. “And we are especially grateful to Mr. and Mrs.
Neag for supporting this event.”
