Celebrate Women Programs: May 2008
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s
health membership program of the University of Connecticut Health
Center, provides valuable health and wellness information to the
community. A variety of programs are being offered in May.
Gear Up for Summer Biking: Technicians from UConn’s Rehab
Services will discuss body mechanics and proper stretching exercises
that will help prepare you for bike riding. Glenn Kohrs from Healthy
Gears – a program that promotes healthy living through indoor biking
classes and group bike rides on scenic Connecticut trails – will
talk about bike safety, new technology and comfort bikes, and
activities that will help achieve realistic goals. The talk will
take place on Thursday, May 8, 7 to 8 p.m. in the Medical Arts and
Research Building, Rehab Services gymnasium, UConn Health Center,
263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Free Screenings for Women: On National Women’s Check-up
Day, May 12, Celebrate Women is teaming up with health care
professionals at the UConn Health Center to offer these screenings:
breast exam; pap smear; and melanoma screening. The screenings will
be held Monday, May 12, 1 to 4 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning
Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Appointments will be taken on a first-call, first-served basis.

Stand Tall against Osteoporosis: Learn how to prevent or
manage osteoporosis and let fractures be a thing of the past.
Experts will give an overview of the new risk assessment tool and
new FDA-approved IV medications for osteoporosis. There will be an
opportunity for individuals to learn their own personal risk for
osteoporotic fragility fractures and what to do about it. The talk
will take place on Tuesday, May 13, noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low
Learning Center at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave.,
Farmington.
An Integrative Approach to Breast Health: Integrative
medicine has long been recognized as a means to bridge the gap
between Eastern and Western medicine. Experts from the Neag
Comprehensive Cancer Center will offer prevention strategies for
optimal breast health. Options for conventional and alternative
treatment methods, acupuncture, and nutritional supplementation will
also be presented. The talk is sponsored by the Charlotte Johnson
Hollfelder Foundation and will be held Tuesday, May 13, 6:30 to 8:30
p.m. at the Farmington Library, 6 Monteith Drive.
Living with Asthma: Asthma is a chronic disease that
affects the airways of the lungs. Most people can control their
asthma and can live active lives. Learn about what causes asthma,
diagnosis, symptoms, how to treat and manage the disease, and how to
lower your risk for having an asthmatic attack. The talk will take
place on Tuesday, May 20, 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning
Center at the UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
