Celebrate Women Programs: September 2008
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health
membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center,
provides valuable health and wellness information to the community.
A variety of programs are being offered in September.
Gynecologic Cancer Awareness: Dr. John Nash will discuss
gynecologic malignancies including cervical, uterine, and ovarian
cancers. His talk will cover who is at risk, as well as prevention
and treatment strategies. The talk will take place Thursday,
September 11, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the L'Oréal Paris store at Westfarms
Mall (lower level) in Farmington. The event is co-sponsored with the
Julie Merle Epstein Cancer Fund and L'Oréal Paris. Refreshments will
be provided and cancer survivors will receive a 10 percent discount
on products purchased at L'Oréal Paris.
Celebrating 15 Years of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer:
Breast health specialists will discuss risk factors for developing
breast cancer, strategies to prevent or lower your risk, and breast
cancer treatments. The talk will be held Monday, September 15, noon
to 1 p.m. in the Low Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263
Farmington Ave., Farmington. You will also have an opportunity to
learn about the 15th anniversary of the American Cancer Society’s
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer five-mile noncompetitive walk
at Bushnell Park in Hartford. Lecture can be viewed live at
www.celebrate.uchc.edu/webcast.
A Journey through the Unpredictable World of Genetic Testing:
The program begins with a viewing of In the Family, an 83-minute
movie about the difficult decision 27-year old Joanna Rudnick had
to make after she tested positive for the mutation that puts her at
high risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer. A panel
discussion will follow the film with plenty of time for questions.
The program will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 6:30 to 9 p.m.
in the Low Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington
Ave., Farmington. Co-sponsored with the
American
Cancer Society. This event is in collaboration with P.O.V., PBS’
award-winning nonfiction film series (www.pbs.org/pov).
Prostate Cancer - Advanced Treatments: The program will include
an overview on benign conditions of the prostate and a discussion of
the most current treatment approaches to prostate cancer. TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® treatment system is a new cancer treatment
available in the state only at the UConn Health Center; and robotic
radical prostatectomy is a precise, minimally invasive technique to
remove a cancerous prostate gland. The talk will be held on Tuesday,
September 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Low Learning Center, UConn
Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
