U.S. Surgeon General to Visit Hartford December 9-10
for Community Discussion on Childhood Obesity Prevention
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Acting Surgeon General Steven Galson, M.D.,
M.P.H., will visit Hartford December 9-10 as part of his national
tour to promote, highlight and discuss best community practices for
preventing childhood obesity.
During his visit, Galson will meet Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez
and members of the Court of Common Council as well as members of
community, faith-based, health care and youth organizations and with
parents and educators to support efforts to help kids stay active,
encourage healthy eating habits and promote healthy choices.
Also during his visit, Galson will participate in a roundtable
discussion on childhood overweight and obesity prevention hosted by
the University of Connecticut and the City of Hartford from 11 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. at the North End Senior Center, 80 Coventry Street.
The roundtable provides an opportunity for community members to
share their successes and discuss ways to collaborate.
“The City of Hartford is honored to welcome Acting Surgeon
General Galson,” says Perez, who is supporting efforts to combat
childhood obesity in the city and improve health outcomes for city
residents through a recently launched Healthy Hartford wellness
campaign that will increase the availability of health related
information to promote physical activity, disease prevention and
resource management. “Galson brings with him a dedication to health
and wellness, and we share in his commitment to make a difference in
the lives of urban residents by promoting healthier choices, better
access to healthcare and a higher quality of life. Hartford's
families deserve the best possible health education and access to
services, and with the help of the Healthy Hartford Campaign, we
will bring that to the residents of our great city.”
Partners in the Healthy Hartford Campaign who helped organized
the surgeon general’s visit and roundtable discussion are the
Connecticut Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), the UConn Center
