Celebrate Women Programs: March 2008
FARMINGTON, CONN. – Celebrate Women, the free women’s health
membership program of the University of Connecticut Health Center,
provides valuable health and wellness information to the community.
A variety of programs are being offered in March.
Hope for the Overactive Bladder: Normal life events like
childbearing or aging can be stressful on the bladder control
systems. The end result is the inability to normally store and
eliminate urine. Dr. Phillip P. Smith, urologist, will discuss
overactive bladder syndrome, its causes and evaluation, and old and
new treatments on Monday, March 10, noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Low
Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave.,
Farmington. The lecture can be viewed live at
www.celebrate.uchc.edu/webcast, where you can also access
archived webcasts.
Preparing for Menopause: Most women will experience
menopausal symptoms but the level of severity varies. Dr. Ursula
Steadman, obstetrician/gynecologist, will discuss what to expect
once menopause begins, the effects on emotional and physical health,
common symptoms such as hot flashes and mood changes, and ways to
cope with these symptoms. The talk will take place on Thursday,
March 13, 6 to 7 p.m. in the Onyiuke Dining Room at the UConn Health
Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Way Past Counting Sheep: Did you ever wake up from a sound
sleep and lie in bed thinking about work, family, or something you
need to do the next day? Do you find it hard to fall back asleep?
Dr. Daniel McNally, pulmonologist and director of the Sleep
Disorders Center, will discuss what to do when you can’t fall
asleep, why people wake from a sound sleep, and which sleep remedies
may be right for you. The talk will be held Wednesday, March 19, 6
to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning Center, UConn Health Center, 263
Farmington Ave., Farmington.
Women and Colon Cancer: Colon cancer is the third most
commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States in both men and
women. In honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Dr.
Joseph Anderson, gastroenterologist, will discuss the unique
challenges regarding women and colorectal cancer screening. He will
also present his research findings, which include the prototype
scope that he helped develop, and examination of risk factors in
women. In addition, Dr. Bruce Brenner, surgical oncologist, will
discuss the surgical treatment of colon cancer. The talk will be
held Tuesday, March 25, 6 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Low Learning
Center, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington.
