New Exhibit Features Cloth and Paper Quilting
Exhibit: “Quilting Pleasures” creations by Phyllis Small of West Hartford
Where: Main and mezzanine lobbies, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington
When: February 14 through April 30, daily 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
About the artist:
Phyllis Small comes from a background in papermaking, silkscreen printing and collage/mixed media. To her, the repeating patterns of traditional quilts are much like collages, but made
with fabrics and threads instead of paper and glue. With that in mind, she began to create traditionally designed quilts using nontraditional materials, such as paper and string. In
addition to purchased papers, Small makes her own papers, some of which she may print or paint, to sew her paper quilts. She also creates fabric quilts, reversing the process, using her
collages and prints as inspiration. “The same elements of design and color work in whatever medium I am using, and I find the variety of materials irresistible,” she states.
Small has received awards from the New England Quilt Association, the Wintonbury Art League in Bloomfield, the New Britain Museum Friends Exhibition, the Northwestern Connecticut Art
Association in New Milford and other art organizations. She participated in the New York Cow Parade 2000, and has exhibited at the West Hartford Art League, 100 Pearl Street Gallery in
Hartford, the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, Canton Gallery on the Green and other art venues.
Small has studied at the University of Hartford, the West Harford Art League, the Farmington Valley Arts Center, the Pratt Institute in New York, and Hartford’s Artists Collective, as
well as with local collage and drawing/painting artists.
