UConn Has New Hypertension Specialist

Dr. Apurv Khanna Joins Health Center from Texas Tech

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Hypertension specialist Apurv Khanna, M.D., is now seeing patients at the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Khanna has a particular interest in hypertension as it relates to kidney disease and renovascular disease, which is the primary focus of his clinical research.

“Hypertension and kidney disease are both major public health issues,” Khanna says. “We’re looking at the interaction between the two, with research that would have implications for early diagnosis and treatment.”

Khanna comes to the Health Center from the Texas Tech University Health Science Center, where he was an assistant professor in the division of nephrology. He graduated from King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, India, was an internal medicine resident at the Crozier-Chester Medical Center and Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, and completed clinical and research fellowships in nephrology at Texas Tech. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.

In addition to his clinical and research duties, Khanna is an assistant professor at the UConn School of Medicine.

"Dr. Khanna adds a new dimension to both our faculty practice and clinical research program in the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center with his expertise in diseases of the kidney and blood vessels,” says William B. White, M.D., chief of hypertension and clinical pharmacology. “He is qualified to see patients with high blood pressure who also have secondary forms of hypertension and complications including heart, kidney, and brain dysfunction. In addition, he will be assuming the leadership of the non-invasive vascular function program that involves research in many areas related to vascular disorders."

Khanna, 40, lives in West Hartford.
