Regional Collaboration on Research and
Education
As the proposed partnership with Hartford Healthcare Corp.
has moved forward, so too have efforts progressed to create
opportunities for hospitals in the area to come together with
the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine to regularly
exchange ideas, review shared projects and establish strategic
direction and priorities for education and research initiatives.
Over the past year, Dr. Paul Dworkin, chair of the Department
of Pediatrics, has led a broadly representative group of
individuals from the area hospitals, to build a consortium to
support research programs that are part of the Connecticut
Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (CICATS).
In addition, Drs. Bruce Koeppen, Kiki Nissen, Robert Bona,
Bruce Liang and Monty MacNeil, Dean of the UConn School of
Dental Medicine, are working closely with colleagues from
Hartford Hospital, the Hospital of Central Connecticut,
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital and
Medical Center, and Bristol Hospital. Together, they are
developing ways to collaborate to enhance the educational
experience of UConn medical and dental students, residents and
fellows who complete aspects of their training, including
research projects, in hospitals throughout the region.
I am confident that by working together, we can strengthen
the educational and research mission of our schools, elevate the
standard of care in our region, and enhance the regional and
national reputations of all institutions that are part of this
collaborative effort.
I look forward to sharing updates with you as these
collaborative efforts move forward.
