General Information – Summer 2009
Thank you for your interest in the University of Connecticut
Health Center Student Volunteer Summer Program.
This program is designed to provide brief experiences for
students who have a specific interest in health careers while
providing useful service to Health Center patients and staff.
We believe that volunteers deserve to be well trained and
well placed so that their interests and abilities are challenged
and encouraged. In return, the volunteers are expected to take
their responsibility to the Health Center seriously.
Eligibility
The program is open to high school students who are at least
14 years of age by July 1, 2009. Placement will be made without
regard to race, sex, religion, or national origin. Openings,
however, are limited, so we encourage you to complete the
application process quickly. Your application must be received
in our office no later than May 1, 2009 in order for you to be
considered for the program. No interviews will be held after May
30, 2009. Remember, you must be interested in a career in the
health field to apply.
Time
The Summer Junior Program will begin with orientation on June
22, 2009 and will continue through August. Each volunteer is
expected to make a commitment of a minimum of 75 hours prior to
August 31, 2009 and to volunteer during the entire summer with
two weeks off for vacation. We will attempt to place
volunteers in their choice of
assignments on the days they prefer.
Training
- General Orientation for All Volunteers: Monday, June
22, 2009 in the Low Learning Center from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Food is available for purchase in the Food Court.
Application and Interviews
In order to become a volunteer, it is necessary to submit the following forms to the Volunteer Office no later than
May 1, 2009:
Mail to:
Department of Volunteer Services
University of Connecticut Health Center
263 Farmington Avenue
Farmington, CT 06030-2825
Contact Ms. Connie Aloise, coordinator, at 860-679-2381 after May 1,
2009 to schedule an interview. Interviews will be held during the month
of May.
If a volunteer has already been a Health Center volunteer and wants
to volunteer again, he or she must telephone the volunteer office at
860-679-3281 no later than May 1, 2009 advising volunteer personal of
the date of his or her health screening appointment. At that time, the
returning volunteer’s application will be processed for placement. No
interview is necessary.
Health Screening
Health Center infection control policies require that all volunteers be in good general health and screened for immunity to certain diseases. Review the
Instructional Form for Volunteer Health Screening (PDF) for the required health screening and complete the
Volunteer
Screening Documentation Form (PDF).
NOTE: The volunteer’s physician must complete the Volunteer
Screening Documentation Form. The volunteer must take this form to an
appointment with Occupational/Environmental Medicine (Employee Health).
If the volunteer requires any testing or immunization(s), they will be
provided to him or her free of charge. Please refer to the Check List for Student Volunteer Service
(PDF) and the above forms for specific details.
References
The school reference form that is attached to the application should be given to a teacher or guidance counselor who knows the volunteer well. Please mail the completed School Reference Form
with your application. Returning volunteers will ordinarily not be asked to supply a reference, but must complete all other portions of the application.
Former Volunteers
Former volunteers must complete the entire application except
for the reference letter and the personal interview. They must
attend the General Orientation on Monday, June 22, 2009. We will
make every attempt to give their applications priority over the
application of a new volunteer if applications are received by
May 1, 2009.
Notification of Placement
Assignments, specific training times, and workdays for the
whole summer will be scheduled in June. You will receive your
assignments and schedule at the volunteer orientation. The
earlier you apply, the greater your chances to be placed. We will
work on a first come, first served basis.
Attire
A neat appearance is important to us! Junior volunteers who
work in patient care or public contact areas have to wear jersey
shirts and white/khaki pants or skirts. Mini skirts, jeans,
shorts, and torn clothes of any kind are not acceptable. No
sandals, high heels, or flip flops may be worn. Clean sneakers
are preferred. Identification badges, issued by the Department
of Public Safety, must be worn at all times. Volunteers not in
appropriate attire will be sent home.
Meals
The student may purchase meals/snacks in the Food Court. Those who volunteer more than four hours a day will be eligible for a
$4.00 meal pass.
